The department
offers three undergraduate (BADS, BASHD, and BABJ) and two graduate (MACS and MASLP) degree
programs and comprises two distinct professional/disciplinary areas:
speech-language-hearing and communication studies.
Beyond this, the primary
focus of the BASHD program is the science of normal human communication, while the primary
focus of the MASLP program is the professional preparation of entry-level speech-language
pathologists and their full scope of practice. The MASLP program is accredited by the
council on Academic Accreditation in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
In the communication studies area, the
BADS program offers four tracks or concentrations for students: Public
Relations/Corporate Communication, Interpersonal/ Relational Communication,
Media Management/Production, and Rhetoric/Critical Studies. The primary focus of the MACS
program is on organizational/professional communication strategies and practice, although
students can develop a focus on communication theory and research through their electives
and thus prepare for further graduate study.
This diversity within and
among the various degree areas is a significant consideration in the development of goals
and objectives within and for the department. We have tried to recognize both the
distinctions and connections that exist as we engage in the department-wide and
department-based process. As a result of the complexity of the process, we have chosen to
use this document to present the goals and objectives that are departmentally grounded
while still recognizing particular program-related issues. The specifics of
the process are, in some respects, common to all programs and in other respects unique to
individual programs and/or grouping.
